There are certain applications
where steel gratings are not suitable. The environment is either
corrosive or a high maintenance headache. Steel grating is very
heavy in comparison and the load must be designed into the supporting
structure. After installation it begins to rust in wet or corrosive
environments. Maintenance Departments constantly submit maintenance
improvements to their budgets, adding further cost. Also, most
steel gratings have little or no anti-slip resistance. Slipping
causes most accidents in the work place.

Steel grating normally
sells for around £25 to £35 per square metre, aluminium
grating around £65 to £75 per square metre, and
stainless steel for around £95 per square metre. Moulded
grating averages around £60 per square metre, but is the
lowest when you consider Life Cycle Costs along
with the anti-slip benefit.

Rectangular steel grating
and some rectangular moulded grating has good deflection only
in one direction. With a square grid pattern, deflection is
in both directions and cannot be installed incorrectly. Square
grid patterns allows access holes to be cut from the centre
of the panel, and does not degrade the strength of the panel
in any way. For most projects, the ease of cutting lowers costs
since it can be done without specialist cutting and welding
equipment. It is also light enough to avoid the need for cranes.
Cut outs can be made in the grating for pipe work etc. and because
the bearing bars bear in both directions, extra support is not
required.

Green is the industry
standard colour but light grey is also a stock colour. For larger
quantities, fibreglass grating can be manufactured in any RAL
colour. Fibreglass Grating Ltd have supplied many different
colours to a wide range of clients.

For larger projects
we can supply panels manufactured to the customers exact size.
Standard panel sizes are 2m x 1m, 3m x 1m, 4m x 1m and 3.66m
x 1.22m. We also offer all customers a free of charge cutting
and resin sealing service.

For pedestrian traffic
and medium loadings, fibreglass grating is perfectly adequate.
On some occasions it can be used in heavy load situations. For
example in narrow drainage gullies. As a basic guide, our 25mm
grating will comfortably withstand 1/3 ton per square metre
and the 38mm 1/2 ton per square metre. These figures are based
on 1 metre wide gratings supported on 4 sides. If the width
is smaller and the correct support is provided, these figures
can be multiplied many times. For example, at 300mm wide, our
38mm grating can withstand loadings in excess of 12 tons!

Consider these important
points:
1) Reduced support structure.
2) Ease of installation.
3) Zero Maintenance.
4) Easily lifted by one or two people.
Overall, the life cycle costs of moulded fibreglass grating will be much less than steel.

Both surfaces offer
excellent anti-slip properties. There are circumstances where
a grit surface can be a problem. For example, grit particles
could get into delicate machinery or food products. The addition
of a quartz grit surface prolongs the life of the grating and
is recommended in heavy use areas.

There are three types
of resin systems available. Orthophalic is an industrial grade
resin used in non-corrosive situations. Isophthalic is a superior
grade of resin, which meets most corrosive applications. Vinyl
Ester resin is the highest quality, and used only in extreme
situations.
